Granit Xhaka hits back at Arsenal critics after Tottenham draw
Granit Xhaka has hit back at his critics and insists Arsenal deserve much more credit than they receive.
Xhaka came under scrutiny in the weekend after he fouled Heung-min Son to give away a penalty in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
Arsenal fought back from two goals down to secure a point and Xhaka says that the Gunners have been criticised for their start to the match.
“Obviously critics are always here,” he explained. “The north London derby,” I believe we had a fantastic game. I made a mistake but if you saw the match, we could have won.
“We had lots of opportunities but this is football. The possibilities are not spoken about by anybody, nobody talks about how many we overlooked. They constantly speak about the errors.
“This is part of football.”
Xhaka is off on international duty with Switzerland, that face the Republic of Ireland at a Euro 2020 qualifier on Thursday – live on Sky Sports.
Switzerland are to be able to concentrate on his Liverpool career, without Xherdan Shaqiri, who has requested not to be considered for soccer.
Reports in Switzerland have suggested Shaqiri is miserable with the decision to appoint Xhaka as captain of the side of manager Vladimir Petkovic.
However, Xhaka has also played down rumours of a rift from the Switzerland camp.
“I can only speak about just how important he is with this particular team,” said Xhaka.
“He is a great player, fantastic quality. He will help us and we are extremely disappointed he is not here.
“But we have other players as well who’ve caliber.
“I really don’t want to talk about why and exactly what happened, since I do not understand the reasons precisely, but we’ve lost a large player for these matches.”
The Guy Havord of sky talked to Palao Laurenti of Swiss Radio who triumphed a issue is with Shaqiri and national coach.
Laurenti said:” This was a big surprise because he is one of the greatest national players to us.
“It does not look like he is getting the best time in Liverpool, he is not enjoying very much.
“There are some rumours that the relationship between the trainer aren’t so good.
“He expected the captain’s armband and people believe Shaqiri is mad at the choice.
“We do expect him to go back to the squad after the two qualifiers against Ireland and Gibraltar.”
