Italian Matteo Trentin regained the lead of Britain’s Tour after finishing third in phase five.
The 174.1km point, which started and ended in Birkenhead with the road taking the riders throughout Cheshire, was acquired by Dutch rider Dylan Groenewegen.
Groenewegen, racing for Team Jumbo-Visma, completed as Britain’s Matt Walls and Trentin.
Trentin retains a lead over cyclist Mathieu van der Poel.
Thirty-year-old Trentin was top but dropped before reclaiming top spot and holds a benefit.
The sixth of eight stages takes place on Thursday and also can be a 14.4km individual time trial in Pershore, Worcestershire.
