Martin Tyler speaks Sky Sports throughout his best and very first commentary minutes with England.
The first England match that I commentated on, I’ll never forget. It was a wonderful honour to be chosen, I worked in the time for ITV, in 1982.
They’d selected me to do the World Cup finals that summer. When I was chosen that I had never performed an England game I pointed out, and I had been given a game in the build-up away to Wales Ninian Park, at the Cardiff City Stadium. England won 1-0 with Trevor Francis.
It was a fantastic feeling, in a peculiar way and it would be felt by commentators as well, when you get chosen to commentate on England it’s a bit like getting picked to play as an individual participant.
