Daniil Medvedev trolls US Open crowd after win: ‘I won because of you’
(CNN) — Daniil Medvedev has come to be this year’s US Open villain.
The Russian conquered Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 7-6(1), 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-4 — his second four-set triumph in consecutive days — but it was his unruly behaviour on the court which had supporters lustily booing the 23-year-old in Louis Armstrong Stadium at Friday’s night session.
Medvedev first obtained at the first group below the fans’ skin, after he angrily grabbed a towel when he received a code violation. When learning that he had been given by seat umpire Damien Dumusois , his racquet withdrew.
Later, after a confrontation with Dumusois, TV cameras picked up Medvedev putting a hand into his head that give the middle finger — outside of the view of Dumusois. Boos rained down in the audience, and Lopez quickly became the fan favourite.
Medvedev lifted his arms up , motioning to the crowd, after he won, surrounded by boos.
“Thank you all, men, because your energy tonight gave me the triumph,” Medvedev said in a meeting on court. “Because if you’re not here, men, I likely would lose the game. Yesterday because I was so exhausted, I was cramping. It had been so tough. So I need every one of you to be aware of when you sleep soundly tonight, I won for you.”
The boos lasted.
“The energy you’re giving me now, guys, I believe it will be sufficient for my five following matches. I mean, the more you do that, the more I will win for you men ”
Nothing new for Russian
In regards to Medvedev, controversy is nothing new. Such as tossing coins at the leadership of chair umpire Mariana Alves after a reduction he had been fined $14,500 for infractions.
He had been disqualified by a Challenger event a year earlier for making a racist remark in Georgia. Aggrieved that a call went when playing Donald Young, he said to the chair umpire Sandy French — Young and French are both shameful –“I understand that you are buddies. I’m sure about it”
He later apologized.
Even the Russian, seeded fifth, has dominated the hard courts this summer, such as winning his first Masters 1000 title at the Southern & Western Open at the Cincinnati suburb of Mason, Ohio, earlier this season. His next opponent would be 118th-ranked qualifier Dominik Koepfer.
