BETTING THE OSCARS ODDS: BEST PICKS FOR THE 2019 ACADEMY AWARDS
Last year’s Academy Awards, airing February 24 at 8:30 p.m. EST on ABC, have experienced a bumpy road, with declared (and retracted) class changes and an ultimately fruitless search for a host (the show will proceed without a bunch for the first time since 1989). However they stay the pop-culture betting opportunity of this year.
For the 91st Academy Awards, Las Vegas-based movie critic Josh Bell provides his insights into the best stakes in the significant classes and which movies should walk away with the awards–and the money.

What is going to Win: This season has been more volatile than most, with assorted controversies and disagreements surrounding a range of nominees, along with the ceremony itself. So it is tougher to pick on a clear Greatest Picture frontrunnerbased on momentum from prior awards. Roma may seem like the clear choice based on its BAFTAs and Critics’ Choice wins, but a film not from the English language hasn’t won Best Picture before, and veteran Academy members may nonetheless be resistant to awarding a Netflix generation. Green Book, with its typically Oscar-friendly story about overcoming cultural differences, inspired by true events, could most likely be the safest bet, though objections in the family of subject Don Shirley and disagreeable news stories about manager Peter Farrelly and co-writer Nick Vallelonga have tarnished its odds a little. Do not count out old-school Hollywood crowd-pleaser A Star Is Born or offbeat period play (always a favorite Academy genre) The Favourite, either.
What Should Grow: Although its LGBT-focused story, off-kilter design and quirky sense of humor might be a bit too much for Academy members, The Favourite is the very best and most imaginative of this year’s nominees, a brilliantly acted, darkly funny story about the intersection of sexual appetite and political power, far more incisive and enjoyable than the muddled Vice. It may be easier for novices to comprehend the person achievements than the film as a whole, but it’s more than deserving of this award.
