Rangers confirm Southampton’s Ross Wilson as new sporting director
After he abandoned his job as director of football operations rangers have appointed Ross Wilson as the new sporting manager of the club.
Wilson replaces Mark Allen, who left his position after two years at Ibrox last month as director of football.
The 36-year-old had been linked with a move until Allens appointment to Glasgow but remained on the shore.
He will now return to operate alongside manager Steven Gerrard and spent years in the Premier League side after operating in various roles at Watford, Falkirk and Huddersfield Town.
Firstly, and I am certain it goes without sayingI am delighted to be joining Rangers. Through the years I have had very positive discussions with the club, Wilson told the Rangers website.
The vision and passion shared together by the board and by Steven in terms of the plans to continue to create the club are all exciting. It was significant that the club and that I shared the exact same understanding of what this function is and exactly that which the soccer model and culture in the club needs to look like moving forward.
The board have been resolute in all our discussions both now and when we spoke in the past about what the club needs to look like and Im proud they believe that I can help build the club on standards which most of us agree are perfect for Rangers.
Having worked in soccer leadership for the previous 15 decades and for almost a decade in England today is a fantastic period for me to return to Glasgow and be part of the famed club. I am excited to begin next month.
Steven and his training staff do a great job with matters onto the pitch, along with the players naturally. I know some of the squad already and others I will get to understand in the coming months. Steven and Im in regular contact and I am excited about working with him developing our relationship further.
Wilson said his role will see him coping with all the clubs surgeries andfootball infrastructure, which would include the Rangers academy.
This job is of course about continuing the development and growth of the clubs football operations along with soccer infrastructure across the whole club, he added. In that respect Im anticipating working in and growing all facets of the football departments and none more than the academy with Craig Mulholland and his group.
I have chosen to make an excellent job and people who I am really close to. Southampton isnt a simple spot to depart and it had to be a chance to think about leaving behind what I had there.
This task, at this stage in my career, was one I felt I had to take and I am both excited and determined to make sure that in working along with the plank, Steven and all our team we could continue to construct an excellent, modern football infrastructure and also a winning Rangers.
Before going on to oversee the clubs football operations wilson joined Southampton in 2015, initially as director of scouting and recruiting.
Southampton CEO Martin Semmens stated:In the moment Ross made me aware of the chance to return home to Scotland, it had been clear this was a chance he couldnt turn down in this moment.
I would like to put on record, on behalf of everybody involved in the club, our thanks to the tireless hard work and energy Ross has contributed to Saints over the past five decades. 15th 13, ross will depart the club on Tuesday with our very best wishes.
Since the club has made clear over the past six months, were reviewing our football and non-football operations, to ensure we are best positioned to allow a prosperous future for The Southampton Way. Well now try to create a new Soccer Manager in keeping with this vision to the club.
