Manchester United win 5-3 on penalties.
Manchester United overcame a large scare against Rochdale, after being held to a 1-1 draw at regular time in Old 29, winning a Carabao Cup penalty shootout 5-3.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s negative had wasted a number of chances earlier Mason Greenwood (68) scored his second senior target with a thunderous effort.
But Rochdale got themselves back to the third-round tie perhaps not long afterwards as 16-year-old Luke Matheson (75) levelled for the visitors to finally send the game to penalties.
It was a professional shoot-out from United – who scored all their spot-kicks – while a miss from midfielder Jimmy Keohane watched Rochdale agonisingly exit the contest.
United will travel to Chelsea in the fourth round of this Carabao Cup.
United dominated the first half but wasted a variety of chances. Some marvellous saves from Rochdale goalkeeper Robert Sanchez kept out them, along together with his 2 stops. The hosts went first and scored each of the penalties, but a miss from Keohane, who saw Rochdale’s next kick rescued by Sergio Romero, ultimately sealed their departure from the contest.
It was another remarkable performance from Greenwood. He even also took his target while a few chances were missed by him and it was a strike that overcome a confident goalkeeper.
In addition, he scored a cool penalty in the shootout, not revealing any flash and he should be delighted with his operation.
While it wasn’t the performance from Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was amazed with 17-year-old Greenwood as well as their opponents Rochdale.
He explained :”Penalty shoot-outs could go either way. I believed Rochdale were fantastic, we studied and analysed them and they’re a little unorthodox, but they are confident and the way they set their team up, it was great tonight to see them.
“We’re through, so we’re satisfied with this and that’s one also. The second is the fans, they have been incredible back and the third were penalties. They were composed and the boys enjoyed shooting them.
“You always want some quality in the last third and we lacked that sometimes. They defended well, of course we ought to have scored many goals, but we have talked about it several times that when you do not take the chances, it is going to be a challenging night but we’ve got Mason who knows where the objective is.
“He also scored a good goal now as well and he’s a certain finisher but you’ve got to remember, he’s 18 second week so give him the time and he will be a very good player.”
Rochdale director Bryan Barry-Murphy was so pleased with his side played in Old Trafford in what he called the”adventure of a lifetime”.
He explained:”I think it was a really successful day for us. Our lads gave absolutely everything within this contest right although you’d say we’d desire to win the tie and move through and not celebrate being knocked out of the contest if we’re attempting to become perfectionists.
“For the men about the pitch and around the sides, it had been the adventure of a life and one they’ll aspire to replicate as they advance through their careers.”
It’s a game for Man Utd second as they sponsor Arsenal about Monday Night Football Thursday before traveling to AZ Alkmaar at the Europa League. For Rochdale, they sponsor Wycombe at League One.
