Manchester rivals Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden united, says Aidy Boothroyd
England U21 head trainer Aidy Boothroyd says before showing the Manchester United forward is sharing a space with club rival Phil Foden on international duty he’s been hugely impressed by Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood and also Manchester City midfielder Foden are contained for the very first time, together with the United forward earning his first call-up to Boothroyd’s side.
The 17-year-old has showcased in all of United’s games this year.
“He is a very, very gifted player,” Boothroyd stated. “He walks through the door and you immediately like him because he’s such a humble, pleasant young bloke.
“He is rooming with Phil funnily enough so that’s both Manchester lads getting together and performing for England as well as residing together for a few weeks too.
“Mason’s a excellent talent, we’ve only had one session but he looks very impressive and will definitely increase the armoury we’ve got.”
Nineteen-year-old Foden has showcased 19 times in the Premier League for City since making his debut. Despite struggling so far this year, Boothroyd says his position isn’t one to be worried about.
“Phil’s operating together with the best players from the world and arguably the best trainer in the world so he’s going to find a lot of positives from that,” he added.
“He’s not playing games but I believe City and Pep [Guardiola] know exactly just what to do with him better than maybe I would because they see of him than I do.”
Considering that the summer’s disappointing European Championship effort – that watched Boothroyd’s staff exit the championship in the group stage – three members of that squad have been called up into the side.
Mason Mount aaron Wan-Bissaka and James Maddison have been selected by Gareth Southgate, and Boothroyd believes there’s never been better time to make the step up from the U21s.
“It is excellent for me although we had the disappointment of this summer, three celebrities have come from it. They’re all really good characters and I’m absolutely thrilled for them,” he explained.
“There’s never been a better time to become an England player using a man who is brave enough to play with them at Gareth.
“I believe that they’re three very talented players and they take advantage of themselves. They’re currently working .
“They deservedly got into the England squad and now they have to do this last bit of getting to the group and getting a few caps under their belt”
The U21s kick-off their new European qualifying campaign with a visit to Turkey before three days 28, they go home to play with with Kosovo at Hull.
