Leeds midfielder Jordan Stevens suspended for betting breaches
Leeds midfielder Jordan Stevens was suspended from all footballing activity for six weeks after being found guilty of breaching FA regulations that were gambling.
The charges alleged that Stevens placed 59 bets on soccer matches between August 6, 2018, and May 27, 2019.
The 19-year-old, that made a Sky Bet Championship appearance for Leeds last year, confessed that a misconduct charge to the Betting Rules of the FA and was fined #1,200.
Stevens contains and signed for Leeds from Forest Green Rovers at January 2018 under a year remaining on his current deal at Elland Road.
He showcased for Marcelo Bielsa’s side through pre-season but is still to make an appearance for the Whites this year.
A statement from the club :”We acknowledge the sanctions passed down by the FA into Jordan Stevens after a breach of betting regulations.
“We can support Jordan through this procedure, he’s a young footballer who requires educating on the hazards of external influences and the way to conduct himself as a professional footballer.
“As a club we believe that banning a 19-year-old footballer from participating in training or interacting with all the club staff is still an excessive punishment.”
Leeds’ chief executive Angus Kinnear stated:”Although we fully recognise the importance of the FA’s part in safeguarding the integrity of this game, we’re hugely disappointed in the FA’s selection of sanction.
“To protect against young footballer from participate in any football activities at this crucial period of his career is a disproportionate punishment after a ridiculous mistake from a young player.
“We are especially disappointed that the sanction was decided by 2 former professional footballers who we expected could have needed a better comprehension of the impact of their decision.”
